Process Paper

We selected this topic because Japan interests us and we wanted to do something about it. We then realized that every piece of clothing has a story and it communicates who you are. That's when we knew no country would communicate fashion as well as Japan. Japan possesses a wide range of clothing types, such as traditional, modern, gothic, chic, and streetwear. But it wasn't set in stone right from the start. Over time, they discovered new clothing styles, each

one communicating in its own way.

We spoke about the ancient history of clothing as well as new modern styles and conducted our research based on the progress in styles over time. We chose to make a website after we had conducted our research because this way we can share our findings with the world. We then split up into branches and did our own research. Every now and then we’d come together to discuss our findings to see if we could find a bigger picture. We made resource exchanges with each other.   Also, we found  primary and secondary sources from websites, videos, interviews, newspapers, and etc. It was very informative and helpful to our project because it gave us a variety of information from different time periods and perspectives.

This year's National History Day Fair’s Theme is communication. Communication through fashion in Japan is a perfect embodiment of the theme. Fashion in Japan allows Japanese to express themselves, and in ancient times people would express their opinions through their clothing choices. Fashion in Japan is a form of communication because it’s a way of expressing how people feel and is influenced by time, society, culture, and etc. For example, at a funeral people wear all black to express their sadness for the person who died and their loved ones. Many different people might make different inferences based off of a certain piece, and that’s what makes fashion so unique.
