This is a Japanese Woman in 1955

Japan was first introduced  to westerners in 1543 when a Portuguese ship got caught in a typhoon and ended up in Japan. About 300 years after the incident the Japanese started to implement western fashion in their industry. This is a form of communication because Japan is experimenting with a style that came from another country. They are ready to test the waters and dive into a new world, while also not forgetting their own.

In the early 1900's more and more women began wearing western clothing while keeping it appropriate to the Japanese culture. The Japanese women wanted to communicate that they were sophisticated and modern.

Fashion Influenced by World War

-Ye-Ari Kim

In the United States, during World War II, women had to work jobs that men used to have, because men went to war. This was different from the typical gender roles in society, giving women more freedom. Since women had jobs, they wore more masculine, casual uniforms. When women had more dominant roles compared to the past, they eventually wanted the rights to vote and have a voice. Many different types of clothing were introduced such as the trench coat, tunic jackets,  belts, bell shaped skirts, and etc. There were many modifications in clothing due to the limitations presented. The shortage of materials lead to the style becoming more simple, with a more minimalistic, classic style. A new synthetic fabric, rayon, was developed, and commonly used.  The World Wars had influences the fashion industry in many ways. These western fashion trends eventually shaped Japanese fashion. Modern day Japanese street fashion often includes trench coats, belts, high waisted pants, camouflage print, and belts.
